Great news for Creed 2 fans. MGM recently announced the official release date of the highly-anticipated sequel to 2015s Creed. The new release date hints that MGM is definitely going to put the movie on the fast track as the shooting is scheduled to begin in February 2018 to meet the official release date of November 18th, 2018. Sylvester Stallone finished the script a few months ago and announced in October that he will be directing Creed 2 as well. This new release date puts Creed 2 up against Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph 2 but with the hype and magnitude of Creed 2, the movie is expected to trump any competition. Stallone has already promised the fans that Creed 2 will be bigger and badder than its predecessor. He also teased and almost made it official that Creed 2 will feature Ivan Drago, a character played by Dolph Lundgren in the hugely popular Rocky IV, back in 1985. Creed 2 is scheduled to start filming on February 5, 2018, in Philadelphia. There were reports that MGM was waiting for Ryan Coogler who directed Creed in 2015, to take the director’s chair once again for the sequel but now the project is officially in the very capable hands of Sylvester Stallone himself. Coogler is currently caught up in Marvel’s Black Panther movie. Just last month, Creed 2’s working synopsis was also revealed that states:
“Adonis Creed tries to seek revenge when he goes toe to toe with the man who killed his father.”
Now, every Rocky fan can guess who that man is. Adonis Creed is the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) who got punched to death by Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in Rocky IV. As the working synopsis suggests, Adonis is out for revenge which means Ivan Drago will make his return. It was speculated for a long time that Creed 2 will feature a grudge match between the sons of Ivan Drago and Apollo Creed with Rocky Balboa in Adonis’ corner as his coach and mentor. However, so far Stallone has only teased that he will “at least be throwing one punch in Drago’s direction”. Soon after that, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) sent out a response of his own (video).
Creed came out in 2015 and was made on a modest $35 million budget. The movie proved to be a massive box office success and raked in $173.5 million. Thanks to Sylvester Stallone’s brilliant performance, he even received a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars. Stallone definitely intends to top Creed’s success and is bringing in the big guns. For now, we are happy that the movie is finally going to start filming and will be hitting theaters on November 18th, 2018. We’ll keep you updated with all the Creed 2 developments. Till then, stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
