No, the declining popularity of the Taken franchise did not lead him to this decision. The amazing action star is known for working in dramatic movies but Neeson recently rebranded himself as an action star with a string of Taken movies. He might be in Oscar’s race this year with his upcoming movie Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House. Recently, the popular older action star participated in the Toronto International Film Festival and made the shocking revelation that he is ready to give up his ‘particular set of skills’, for a good reason. Sky News reported this statement by Neeson:
”The thrillers, that was all a pure accident. They’re still throwing serious money at me to do that stuff. I’m like, ‘Guy’s I’m sixty-f***ing-five.’ Audiences are eventually going to go, ‘Come on.’ ”
“The pure accident” resulted in a massive $226 million worldwide earnings back in 2008 when Liam appeared in the first Taken movie. The cause of that ‘accident’ is unknown but we are happy that it happened. However, the same can’t be said about the following Taken sequels.
Taken 2 & Taken 3 never really could come close to the success of the first one but that certainly rebranded Liam Neeson as an older action star we saw in other movies like The A-Team (2010), Nonstop (2014) and Run All Night (2015). Neeson may not be taking on more action roles from now on but the good news is that he still has a couple of action movies in works that he signed on earlier and they will be up for screening in 2018. Neeson revealed:
”I’ve shot one that’s going to come out in January sometime. There might be another. That’s it. But not ‘Taken,’ none of that franchise stuff.”
One of the action movies Neeson is talking about is The Commuter, all set to hit theaters on January 12, 2018. The movie is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. The duo has already worked with each other in Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night. The second action movie is Hard Powder. Neeson will be playing the role of an old and angry snowplow driver who goes after a drug cartel with extreme prejudice when he comes to know that they killed his son. It does have a kind of similar vibe to Taken but we’ll take it. Liam intends to focus more on dramatic movies in order to throw in his bid for the Oscars. There’s no doubt that Liam Neeson is a brilliant actor no matter what genre of movies he features in. Stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
