DC extended universe is expanding and Joker Origin movie is the next one Warner Bros. is planning to create. It’s about time that Warner Bros. decided to bring Batman’s iconic villain’s origin story to the fans. However, the shocking part is that Warner Bros. has decided to put Todd Phillips (The Hangover Trilogy) in the director’s chair and Martin Scorsese who is one of the greatest film makers of all time, will be the one producing it. Deadline broke the news earlier and it keeps getting crazier and crazier.
Warner Bros. is bringing in Scott Silver (8 Mile) to co-write the script with Todd Philips. This Joke origin movie will not be a part of the existing DCEU and according to the reports, this will be the first film under an as of yet unnamed production banner at Warner Bros. This new production banner:
“Can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique story lines with different actors playing the iconic characters.”
In other words, Warner Bros. must be planning on creating more spin-offs under this new banner while keeping the Justice League storyline separate under DCEU. Currently, there is no official synopsis of the Joker movie available but initial reports indicate that the Joker origin movie is going to be set in the 80s. This explains a lot why Warner Bros. decided to bring in Martin Scorsese as they are planning to have a Joker movie set in the same era of the classics like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. But how did they convince the man who has never been associated with a comic book movie, is another matter.
Deadline’s report further reveals that Joker origin movie is not going to be the part of “any other iteration.” This means that we may see a new and a younger actor taking on the iconic villain’s role, other than Jared Leto. Leto is slated to appear as the Joker in Suicide Squad 2 so Warner Bros. is not letting him go anytime soon. Whoever the new actor maybe, he would have to fill in some pretty big shoes especially after Heath Ledger‘s character-defining performance. At this point, this unexpected yet interesting news has left fans with more questions than answers. The movie may come out in 2020 but so far no official release date has been announced. Stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
