Disney & Lucasfilm just confirmed this morning that J.J Abrams has officially come on board to write and direct Star Wars 9. The massively successful modern Star Wars trilogy which started with 2015’s The Force Awakens was the brain child of Abrams himself. Now, he’s making his return once again to write and direct Star Wars 9 to close out the trilogy. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm had this to say about Abrams’ return:
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”
J.J Abrams is responsible to revive the Star Wars franchise once again and make it popular among the modern day audience. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a massive box office hit and made a staggering $2.066 Billion worldwide.
Abrams not only directed the movie, he also pitched in as a writer. It makes perfect sense that Disney & Lucasfilm would want the man behind the success of this modern Star Wars trilogy to come back and close it. Starwars.com broke the news by issuing this official press release:
“J.J. Abrams to Write and Direct Star Wars: Episode IX. J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejoin, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.”
Abrams will co-write Star Wars 9 with Chris Terrio who is best known for his exceptional work on DC’s Batman V Superman, the upcoming Justice League and Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning Argo. Abrams will be taking the director’s chair which was held by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World 2015) previously. Lucasfilm fired Trevorro last week as there were rumors of him being ‘unmanageable’ after having a couple of severe clashes with Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy. However, this is not the first incident Disney & Lucasfilm let go a director. Just a few months ago, directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord were both fired from the Star Wars spin-off Han Solo movie over creative differences which is now helmed by the legendary Ron Howard.
J.J Abrams is famous for taking his work very seriously and is very ‘controlling’ in nature as notoriously reported by the cast members of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Despite all that, Abrams has the full backing of the heads of Disney & Lucasfilm. Star Wars 9 is expected to kick off shooting in early 2018 in order to hit theaters in summer 2019.
