Critics LOVED Stephen King’s classic IT remake and it’s all set to make its way to theaters this weekend. The highly-anticipated R-rated horror flick is expected to generate a huge amount of money after a very slow and dismal month of August, at the box office. New Line Cinema is very confident about the movie so much so that they are moving forward with the IT sequel. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the studio has struck a deal with the IT writer, Gary Dauberman to prepare the script of IT 2 as well which they plan to release in 2019. According to THR, the IT sequel is being called IT: Chapter 2 for now. The studio hasn’t booked an official release date yet but they still plan on starting filming IT 2 earlier next year, in order to release the movie sometime in 2019 – if all goes well with IT coming to theaters this weekend. Both, Cary Fukunaga & Chase Palmer were set to direct IT but they gave up on the project due to creative differences. However, both of them got credited as writers along with Gary Dauberman who wrote the IT script for the current director Andrés Muschietti.
Dauberman also wrote the script of another horror flick, Annabelle: Creation which came out just last month and proved to be a massive hit. An even better news is that Dauberman also created the script of the upcoming Conjuring spin-off, The Nun as well which is going to be released July 13, 2018. Since IT is expected to have a $60 million opening weekend, it’s no surprise New Line Cinema wants to keep its golden writer on board.
For those of you who don’t know much about IT, it’s based on a classic Stephen King novel and is about a group of children known as The Losers Club. When other children in their hometown of Derry, Maine start to disappear, The Losers take it upon themselves to look for them and face their biggest demons, or in this case, a demonic clown named Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) who has centuries-old history of violence and murder. IT: Chapter 2 will take place a few years later after the events of the first movie and The Losers Club will still be right in the middle of it. The reports show that IT: Chapter 2 will also focus more on the evil clown Pennywise and take us back to the 1980s timeline of the first IT movie while exploring other dimensions along the way.
New Line has certainly locked down the same writer for the IT sequel but the same can’t be said about the director Andres Muschietti. However, it seems like the studio may strike a deal with Andres Muschietti any time after this weekend since things are looking great for IT. They would also like to kick off the production of IT sequel as soon as possible in order to meet its 2019 release date. Stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
