Shia LaBeouf became a part of the Evergreen Indiana Jones franchise when he featured as Mutt Williams – Jones’ son in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He received a mixed reaction from the fans and a majority of viewers wasn’t eager to see him reprising the role. Well, their prayers have been answered because the character of Mutt Williams is not included in the Indiana Jones 5 movie which means bye-bye LaBeouf. Screenwriter David Koepp recently completed the script of the movie which is going through minor adjustments and re-writes these days. Entertainment Weekly talked to Koepp regarding Indiana Jones 5 and inquired whether the titular character will get a new protege or not in the upcoming Indiana Jones flick. Koepp did not reveal any detail which is understandable especially since Disney is planning to reboot the Indiana Jones franchise. This Disney-Lucasfilm reboot also means that Indiana Jones 5 will be the last time director Steven Spielberg & Harrison Ford will work together on this franchise.
Koepp confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 doesn’t include Shia LaBeouf or his character by issuing this statement:
“Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say. And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”
The fifth and final Harrison Ford starrer Indiana Jones movie will begin shooting sometime next year in order to meet its July 2020 release date. Ford is nearing 80 and his next adventure is about yet another artifact. This is what Koepp said:
“[It’s] some precious artifact that they’re all looking for. I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post … If the stars align, hopefully, it’ll be his next film.”
One major reason why LaBeouf won’t be a part of Indiana Jones 5 is the way he slammed the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull back in 2010 when he gave an interview to the Los Angeles Times. That movie too was written by David Koepp. Shia mentioned that Harrison Ford actually didn’t care much how the fourth installment of the movie turned out & also accused Koepp of “dropping the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished”. As a response, Ford simply called his young co-star a “F-ing Idiot.”
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull teased the possibility of a new and younger character, namely Mutt Williams taking up the mantle as the next Indiana Jones. There were reports that Disney was interested in Guardians of the Galaxy star, Chris Pratt to put on the dirty old archaeologist shoes for the upcoming movies, but it seems like it may not be happening anymore. Indiana Jones 5 was initially slated to release in July 2019 but since Lucasfilm is so caught up with another highly successful Star Wars franchise, the movie got pushed to July 2020.
