Game of Throne fans know David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as the creative geniuses behind the Emmy award-winning, mega-hit TV series Game of Thrones. Now, the extremely talented duo has been officially brought on board by Disney and LucasFilm to write and produce a brand new Star Wars movies series. President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy explained in her statement that this new series will neither follow the current episodic Skywalker saga nor Rian Johnson’s (writer/director Star Wars: The Last Jedi) recently announced trilogy. In her own words:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
LucasFilm has not announced any official timeline for the new movies but its safe to assume a David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Star War movie won’t be coming to theaters anytime before 2020.
This new series is going to be Disney and Lucasfilm’s second Star Wars movie series with an entirely different timeline. Kathleen Kennedy made the announcement of the first series last year, just a few weeks before the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson, the writer, and director of The Last Jedi will create a new trilogy based on new characters, planets and a story not connected to previous events, within the Star Wars galaxy. There is no official news of when Rian Johnson will commence the production on the first movie of his trilogy but judging by the remarkable job on The Last Jedi which made a whopping $1.313 Billion on a budget of $200 million, we can expect great things from him. Johnson won’t be coming back to conclude the Force Awakens trilogy as it was announced in September last year that J. J Abrams will return to write and direct Star Wars 9 and finish this trilogy. Now with 2 new Star Wars series, one under Rian Johnson and the second coming from the Game of Thrones creators, Star Wars fans won’t be running out of sci-fi intergalactic adventures any time soon.
Not to mention that Disney is already releasing Star Wars spin-offs and the latest to arrive in theaters is Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25, 2018. There are reports that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is going to be the next Star Wars spin-off movie expected to hit theaters sometime in 2020 but there has been no official news regarding that and with 2 new Star Wars series confirmed, the chances of an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off happening are very slim. For now, we can look forward to Solo: A Star Wars Story and then after a year and a half, Star Wars 9 will grace the theaters. Till then, stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
