For months, Daniel Craig gave James Bond fans mini-heart attacks for being uncertain regarding his return. It was in August, that he finally put all the rumors to rest and confirmed that he’ll indeed be returning as the iconic spy in James Bond 25 when The Late Show host, Stephen Colbert asked him point blank. As of yet untitled James Bond 25 is expected to pick up after the events of the last Bond film, Spectre (2015) and it was being assumed that major cast members of Spectre, including Christoph Waltz (Blofeld), will return for Daniel Craig’s last adventure as James Bond. However, that may not be the case. Christoph Waltz played the role of Bond’s arch-nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld from the hit novel series in Spectre and fans absolutely loved his version. Waltz denied taking up the mantle of the evil genius Blofeld prior to the release of Spectre but his character was revealed as the classic Bond villain towards the end of the movie. The double Oscar winner recently gave an interview and was asked about his return in James Bond 25, to which Waltz replied by saying:
“No, I’m sorry. I’m really sad, but that’s the tradition, that there is a new…name. Sorry. I would’ve liked to.”
In case you are not familiar with the “tradition” Waltz is referring to is that no actor has ever reprised the role of Blofeld since You Only Live Twice (1967). A new actor has played the character of Blofeld each time over the years and it looks like the producers are going to keep the tradition alive. But its possible that the filmmakers haven’t really contacted him yet which led Waltz to assume that he may not be coming back but judging by his answer, he seems really definitive. James Bond 25 has the official release date of November 8, 2019, and for now, the project is without a director. There are reports that David McKenzie (Hell or High Water), Yann Demange (’71) and Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) have been shortlisted by the studio.
2018 is just around the corner so we’ll be getting to see the full cast list soon but it looks like Christoph Waltz won’t be on it as he told the good people of Talky Movie in his interview. Let us know who do you wanna see as Bond’s worst nightmare in James Bond 25 and stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
