Sylvester Stallone just made another Instagram post, officially welcoming Romanian boxer Florian Munteanu to Creed 2. Munteanu will be joining the cast as Ivan Drago’s son and this will be his feature film debut. We reported a few months ago that MGM is looking for a suitable athlete to play the role of Drago’s son and UFC fighter Sage Northcutt revealed in an interview that he auditioned for the role. It started out as a rumor but now The Tracking Board and Sylvester Stallone himself have confirmed it by making an Instagram post saying:
“Congratulations to Florian ‘Big Nasty’ Munteanu for getting the part as IVAN DRAGOS son! 27 years old, 6 feet four, 245 pounds of talent.#mgm #creed #creed2.”
According to some earlier reports, the production on Creed 2 was set to begin in February but it looks like the filming is now going to commence this March in Rocky’s hometown, Philadelphia.
This also means that we’ll be hearing a lot of casting announcements in the coming weeks. The titular role of Adonis Creed will be played by the returning Michael B. Jordan and he’ll be joined by Tessa Thompson who played the role of Bianca in 2015s Creed. Its no news that Sylvester Stallone will once again reprise the iconic role of Rocky but this time he’ll come across an opponent he last fought years ago in Rocky IV, Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren and judging by the brutal training regimen he’s going through, it looks like Drago can’t wait to settle the score.
Creed 2 definitely looks like its going to be a grudge match movie centering around Apollo Creed’s son Adonis Creed and Ivan Drago’s son but back in August 2017 Sylvester Stallone stated that he will definitely throw “at least one punch” in Drago’s direction. So it remains to be seen whether Creed 2 will be entirely about the new generation or will the fans once again get to see two titans long passed their primes in action for one last time. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script of Creed 2 and at one point was all set to direct the movie as well. However, it was announced in September that Steven Caple Jr. (A Different Tree, The Land) is going to helm this highly-anticipated sequel. According to some reports, both Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan handpicked him for this job so we the fans can expect some impressive results.
Creed 2 is set to release on November 21, 2018, and that puts it right in the ring with Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 and an untitled Universal project currently in works by director Robert Zemeckis. Since Warner Bros.’ highly-anticipated sequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them 2 is going to open on November 16, just 5 days before Creed 2, this will make things really interesting in terms of box office earnings. The first Creed movie made an impressive $173.5 million on a budget of $35 million so no wonder MGM is feeling confident about this bout. Stay tuned for more and latest Hollywood news.
